about

For a band that’s been around nearly 22 years, you learn as you grow gray and wise that “identity” is a shifting paradigm. Who you were a generation ago matters only in how you’ve developed since. The sounds that survive the early years of self-editing, the furious fights to bring songs to life, the brutal slogs of practicing and over-analyzing and tinkering…those sounds tend to grow into giant heavy beasts. What withers is inexperience, and what flourishes is the weight of a song, played hundreds of times at this point.

Things change, and things stay the same. But songs mutate. They twist and turn and writhe over the years. They grow teeth in weird places, and third eyes, and horns….and sometimes the most beautiful smiles and puppy dog eyes. Sometimes they dress up in sheep’s clothing, hiding the wolf inside. Sometimes they explode over the room, like a shocking volcanic eruption no one had considered possible. They are unpredictable chaos agents in a crowded room, these fattening beasts.

They expand. Slowly bulging, ever yearning. The years…even the singular seconds…of work over the decades add attributes, and personality, and depth. These songs…the ones we’re playing here…they live with us now. Huge animals, constantly staring around waiting to be played with and adored. When we take them out to run, they are in heaven. When we feed them…they gorge uncontrollably. They are quixotic pets, with a savage penchant for chewing off their leash and running into the neighbors’ yards. They can leave a mess. They can be sloppy and wet and clumsy…and yet, we love them all the same.

They live through us, and us through them. A matter of minutes becomes our shared eternity. It’s probably why these songs are so much longer than they used to be. We can’t tear ourselves away from these mutating animals.

And so on “identity:” Every artist’s favorite thing is the last thing they made, so I won’t waste your time and tell you that. But I’ll say that, for us as a band…we’ve never made an album that was more Wounded Buffalo Theory. The ethos of what we’ve tried to do is tattooed on these tracks, played in our favorite setting in the world (Cabinfest), with some of our absolute favorite friends and musicians along with us. Everything that’s us, is here. Good and bad (but mostly good I promise). These song-animals are getting old…in song years, most of them are centenarians. But I think, as is our duty to them, we’ve discovered them in all new ways this time around. Mutated and gigantic, towering over us tiny little humans, salivating to run around and expand and just be alive. We’re humble and proud and never more ecstatic to be their keepers.

May you find something in this, that helps your journey or brings you on a new one. We love y’all, so much. Here’s Parachute. A live album, by Wounded Buffalo Theory.

Please feed the animals.
